Abstract

Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) populations in the Apennine area of the high valley of the Senio river (FI) appear to be in strong numerical growth because of the low environmental resistance and high reproductive success. Surveys carried out in the municipal area of Palazzuolo sul Senio (FI) during 2001 and 2002 on about 15 roe deer family groups showed a correlation between dominant male antler value and forest environment quality. The high carrying capacity of the area, together with low predator presence, seems to contribute also to the reproductive success of this deer and to the increase in the number of individuals of each family group.
