Abstract

Today more than ever a considerable effort is required to find the best compromise between the conservation of the highest functional efficiency of forest ecosystems and the proper use of the goods and services they can provide. Along this line and based on the results of the Project “Enhancement of the timber production of the Chianti woods”, the possibilities offered mainly by chestnut stands in providing wood for barrel production, in particular for the Chianti’s “Carato”, are illustrated. Using local timber production in the manufacture of the wooden barrels for wine aging, as done in the past, could be an important added value in the wine production chain.
