Abstract
Forests are a fundamental biological purification system that allows the production of water with high quality standards at reduced costs. The water produced by forests can be considered potable or of high biological value. A study promoted by the Alpine Forests Working Group of the Alpine Convention investigated the protection of potable drinking water in the Alpine forests. Data was collected from all the Italian Alpine Regions on the presence of springs and mineral springs in the forests and on the overall forestry surface dedicated to springs safeguarding and conservation. Discussion and reflections upon forestry springs protection and management were developed with focus on particular aspects such as remuneration services, cost-benefit interventions, quality marks and hydroforestry policies
