Abstract
Motor vehicle pollution is a very important fraction of overall pollution: urban areas and those near road are the most exposed. The arboreal vegetation in these zones is growing under difficult stress conditions and is a bioindicator of the accumulation of pollutants, particurarly heavy metals. Our work has studied the heavy metal accumulation in two fir trees (Picea abies Karst.) growing along a heavily trafficked road in the dolomitic regions of Dobbiaco (BZ) and Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL). The monitoring network includes wood samples of trees along a road and up to about 50 m from it. Six important elements from heavy metals (Cr, Zn, Pb, Mn, Cu, Fe) were tested.
