Abstract

Le foreste svolgono un ruolo cruciale nella mitigazione e nell’adattamento ai cambiamenti climatici grazie alla loro capacità di regolare il microclima, ridurre le temperature estreme e aumentare la resilienza degli ecosistemi. In questo contesto, le riserve naturali integrali rappresentano sistemi di riferimento di elevato valore, poiché consentono di osservare i processi di maturazione forestale in assenza di disturbi antropici diretti. Tuttavia, il loro contributo funzionale alla mitigazione climatica è ancora scarsamente considerato nella pianificazione forestale e nelle politiche di conservazione. In questo lavoro viene analizzato il ruolo della Riserva Naturale Integrale di Poggio Tre Cancelli (Toscana) nella mitigazione delle temperature estive della copertura forestale, confrontandola con aree sottoposte a diversi regimi di gestione, tra cui un parco naturale e foreste cedue a finalità produttive. L’analisi si basa sull’integrazione di dati satellitari, informazioni strutturali della copertura forestale e variabili topografiche, al fine di valutare le differenze nella temperatura massima superficiale del bosco e i principali fattori che ne determinano la variabilità. I risultati mostrano che la riserva integrale presenta temperature estive significativamente inferiori rispetto alle foreste gestite, con una riduzione media fino a circa 2 °C rispetto ai cedui produttivi e una minore variabilità interannuale. L’altezza della copertura forestale, il contenuto idrico della vegetazione e la distanza dai margini forestali emergono come fattori chiave nel determinare l’effetto di raffreddamento. Lo studio evidenzia come le riserve integrali rappresentino vere e proprie infrastrutture ecologiche, in grado di fornire servizi ecosistemici rilevanti per la mitigazione climatica e per la pianificazione forestale.
