About the Journal

L’Italia Forestale e Montana / Italian Journal of Forest and Mountain Environments is a peer-reviewed scientific Journal published by the Italian Academy of Forest Science (www.aisf.it) dealing with all aspects of forest and environmental sciences, policy, economics, law, with a special focus on Mediterranean and mountain environments. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged, including connections with history, sociology and geography.

The Journal was founded in 1946, and since 2006 is fully available open access on-line (ISSN 2036-3494).

The journal publishes accepted articles online 6 times a year. A paper version of the Journal is sent to subscribers (ISSN 0021-2776).

The journal publishes scientific and scholarly articles, technical notes, editorial features. Special Sections can be opened for special events or topics

Scientific and Scholarly Articles

The journal accepts scientific articles dealing with all fields of forest and environmental sciences, policy, law, economics, wood science, including connections with history, sociology and geography. All scientific or scholarly manuscripts undergo a double blind peer review process. All scientific or scholarly manuscripts must include an Abstract maximum 200 words and 3-5 keywords

a) Original Research Articles – Word limits: Main document 6,000 maximum (excluding tables, figures, and cited literature).

b) Review Articles – Review Articles provide syntheses of the current knowledge and/or new paths of thought in broad topical areas within the scope of the journal. Word limits: Main document 6,000 maximum (excluding tables, figures, and cited literature).

c) Brief Research Communications – Preliminary or novel results on limited scientific data sets or applications of existing methodologies to new research areas. This section also accepts syntheses of Master Thesis reporting innovative and scientifically accurate research results. Word limit: 3500 maximum (excluding tables, figures, and Literature Cited)

Technical Notes

Technical notes can present new field techniques, novel computer algorithms or software applications, interesting results from non-replicated administrative studies, management application of the latest science in a management context and other topics of technical and operative interest. Manuscripts must include an Abstract of no more than 150 words and 3-5 keywords. A short list of cited literature may be included. Manuscripts are evaluated at the discretion of the editor in chief and/or editorial board; technical notes may be sent for outside review. Word limit: 3000 (excluding abstract tables, figures, and literature cited). Field Notes are not considered peer reviewed and are not outlets for reporting original research.

Editorial Features

All manuscripts submitted to these sections are evaluated at the discretion of the editor in chief and/or editorial board; manuscripts submitted to CommentariesDiscussions, and Forest Culture and Perspectives may be sent for outside review

a) Commentaries – This section accepts short opinion pieces on current issues within the journal’s scope. Word Limit: 2,500 maximum

b) Discussions – This section accepts longer opinion pieces and innovative points of view on current issues within the journal’s scope. Word limit: 4,500 maximum

c) Forest Culture and Perspectives – Manuscripts of general interest presenting historical or current aspects of forestry culture are published in this section. Word limit: 4500 max. A shot list of cited references may be included.

d) Letters – Directly address ideas or facts presented in the Journal within the past six months. Word limit: 250 maximum

e) News and book reviews – This section accepts short pieces reporting news and book reviews.

Peer review

Submissions to peer reviewed sections of the journal are first evaluated by the Editorial Board. If the manuscript is considered suitable for publication, it is sent to at least two reviewers. The peer review process is double-blind, where both referees and authors are kept anonymous. Publication decisions by the Editors are final.

Publication Policy and Ethics

The Journal publishes scientific and scholarly articles, technical notes and editorial features. Special sections may be launched for specific events. The Journal accepts manuscripts both in Italian and English. To reach a wider audience authors are encouraged to submit their work in English.

The Journal will consider only original manuscripts that have not been published elsewhere and are not under consideration by another journal. In case of review articles, it is the responsibility of the author to obtain permission from the copyright holder to reproduce figures or tables that have been published elsewhere.

The Journal Publication Ethics refer to the guidelines and standards developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE: https://publicationethics.org/). By submitting a manuscript to the Journal, the author(s) warrant that the manuscript is their own original work and that it has neither been published previously nor is currently being considered for publication elsewhere. They also warrant that the sources of any ideas and/or words in the manuscript that are not their own have been properly attributed through appropriate citations and/or quotes. All sources of financial support for the research should also be disclosed in the manuscript. The author(s) of a manuscript agree that if the manuscript is accepted for publication, the published article will be copyrighted using a Creative Commons “Attribution Non Commercial 4.0 International”. Only those individuals who have made a substantive contribution should be listed as authors; those whose contributions are indirect or marginal (e.g., colleagues or supervisors who have reviewed drafts of the work or provided proofreading assistance, and heads of research institutes/centers/labs) should be named in an “Acknowledgments” section at the end of the article, immediately preceding the Reference List.

License and Term of Use

The Journal is published online according to the Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/). Under this license the Italian Academy of Forest Science retains the ownership of the copyright for the published contents, but allows anyone to download, reuse, reprint, modify, distribute and/or copy the content as long as the original authors and source are cited. In any case, the material published on the Journal website cannot be used for commercial purposes.
