Abstract

EU Regulation 2024/1991 – the Nature Restoration Law – entered into force in August 2024, setting binding restoration targets for degraded ecosystems across Member States. This article examines the implications of this regulatory framework for Italian forestry professionals, identifying three critical dimensions: technical competence, economic sustainability, and practical applicability. Drawing on CONAF's institutional perspective and the experience of forestry practitioners, the article highlights both the opportunities that the NRL offers for recognising the role of forest professionals and the risks associated with implementation that lacks flexible tools, adequate financial resources, and qualified evaluators. Active involvement of the professional community in drafting the National Restoration Plan is advocated.
