Abstract
The Consolidated Law on Forests and Forestry Sectors (Legislative Decree 34 of 2018) provides a definition of old-growth forest, which has been further described, along with the procedures for identifying and creating a national network of old-growth forests, in two specific implementing decrees. This is the first such initiative in Europe. The aim is to protect the identified forests and make them the subject of scientific research that will also inform the management of other Italian forests, adopting a "closer to nature" approach. Research is underway in all Italian regions and provinces, using similar criteria. Information on some of these projects is provided below.
