Abstract

Il contributo analizza la crisi della biodiversità come rischio sistemico globale, evidenziando come il tasso di estinzione di specie e la perdita di habitat siano fortemente connessi a cambiamenti climatici, inquinamento e trasformazioni d’uso del suolo. Nonostante l’evidenza per cui oltre metà del PIL mondiale dipenda dalla natura, i modelli economici e decisionali continuano a privilegiare valori strumentali, trascurando quelli intrinseci e relazionali. È quindi necessario un cambio di paradigma che integri dimensioni ecologiche, economiche, culturali e sociali. In questo contesto, le foreste vetuste e gli alberi antichi rappresentano ecosistemi emblematici: serbatoi di biodiversità e carbonio, ma anche luoghi di identità, memoria e spiritualità. Esperienze in Europa e nel mondo mostrano come i valori simbolici e culturali abbiano storicamente contribuito alla loro conservazione. Si propone pertanto un’evoluzione della definizione di foresta vetusta che, accanto ai criteri ecologici (integrità, continuità, complessità strutturale), riconosca esplicitamente i valori relazionali sensu IPBES. Le foreste vetuste sono inoltre sistemi di riferimento ecologico per protezione, ripristino e gestione sostenibile, fornendo benchmark e indicatori per i Piani Nazionali di Ripristino previsti dal Regolamento (UE) 2024/1991. La creazione di reti connesse di riserve, buffer e corridoi è essenziale per garantirne resilienza e funzionalità nel lungo periodo. La loro tutela diventa così pilastro strategico per attuare il Kunming-Montreal Framework e promuovere una governance integrata della biodiversità.
