Abstract
The Nature Restoration Law (2024) sets legally binding targets for restoring European ecosystems, with particular focus on rivers and floodplains. Wooded riparian zones are transition ecosystems essential for the hydraulic and ecological stability of watercourses: they filter nutrients and sediment, stabilize banks, provide shade and act as ecological corridors. In the Po river basin high anthropogenic pressure, canalization of floodplains, and climate change have reduced the functionality of these environments, increasing vulnerability and hydrogeological risk. The situation is further worsened by the spread of invasive alien species, which compete with native flora and reduce biodiversity. Within this framework lies the long-standing experience of the CREA – Forests and Wood Research Centre in Casale Monferrato (AL), which has been carrying out restoration projects for decades using native plant material and pioneer Salicaceae species. The results show, after 20-30 years, high survival rates of plantations and a gradual functional recovery of fluvial ecosystems.
