Abstract

The Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii Christ) is a species of biogeographical, genetic and ecological interest: long-lived, highly resistant to environmental factors and extreme events, suitable for the restoration of mountain habitats (southern Apennines). The area, limited to a few separate populations within a national park, highlights the particular nature of the reforestation that can be carried out, which must follow the logic of ecological restoration on limited areas rather than extensive reforestation. From this perspective, investing in the cultivation of this species appears important for ex-situ and in-situ conservation: basic materials, seed orchards, cultivation techniques adapted to climate change (as a synthesis of acquired knowledge and innovation). If the traditional wood supply chain now appears to be of limited interest, greater attention can be paid to non-wood forest products, including the possibility of mycorrhization with Tuber for the production of truffles in specialized plantations, as proposed in the paper. The conditions seem suitable for building a lasting collaboration between research and local authorities to enhance the value of the emblematic species of the Pollino National Park.
