Abstract

European walnut is one of the most important hardwood species for timber plantations on abandoned/set aside agricultural fields in Italy. Analytic description of growth represents a suitable t001 to support plantation management. To such an end, a number of walnut plantations have been monitored in centra1 and southern Italy, since 1988. This paper outlines main achieved growth results. On the basis of the data recorded by permanent sample plots, a growth equation has been developed expressing mean quadratic stem diameter at breast height as a function of plantation age, spacing and site index.
