Abstract

The Italian system network of Protected Areas (PAs) dates back to the early1920s; afterwards, from the seventies, nature conservation became an importantpriority and many new PAs have been instituted. Nowadays, terrestrial PAs in Italycover about 2.9 million hectares, corresponding to about 10% of the Italian territory. Moreover, taking in consideration all the Italian complementary set of NATURA 2000sites (SCIs and SPAs), all the protected areas have increased considerably (21% of thecountry). Present work evidences the actual contribution of PAs in the conservation ofmain italian forest and preforest categories, giving also a geographic analysis ofdifferent protected forests at national level and thier evaluation by applying variousbiodiversity indicators.
