Abstract
The third Italian National Congress of Silviculture has spurred a heated debate on systemic silviculture in contrast to close to nature silviculture. Supporters of close to nature silviculture refer to three theses: there is no difference between the practical application of systemic silviculture and close to nature silviculture; systemic silviculture lacks empirical verification; systemic silviculture is based on fragile foundations because it is not possible to imagine an un-structured forest.Theories, axioms, states and processes regarding research in ecology, silviculture and forest management are examined, to clarify current debate on systemic silviculture and close to nature silviculture.
