Abstract

Forest management in protected areas is mostly aimed to fostering natural forest regeneration by limiting, as much as possible, human intervention.
This aim can be reached only through an accurate interpretation of the land which should be comprehensive of the complex evolutions that characterize the forest ecosystem.
Especially in protected areas, the data taken on the same environment by foresters, botanists, naturalists, zoologists and other experts, represent a cognitive potential which, thanks to current low cost technologies, gives these forest experts an even more complete idea of the land.
This work provides an overview of the modern land survey and analysis methods used in forest resource management by showing the case of the Forest Management Plan drawn up for the Castelporziano Presidential Estate, recently established as State Nature Reserve.
