Abstract

The forestry measures envisaged by the "Natural Restoration Law" include afforestation (iforestation) and reforestation (reforestation) interventions aimed at re-establishing the favorable reference surface of a forest habitat or recovering severely degraded areas, contributing to the achievement of the target of planting three billion trees and increasing forest connectivity. The paper analyzes the problem of forest ecosystem degradation and its causes, highlighting the connections between the "Natural Restoration Law" and reforestation. Reforestation has characterized much of the Italian forestry history of the last century, and the experience gained regarding the issues addressed and the techniques adopted can serve as a guide for future interventions. After an overview of the various legislative measures that have followed one another since the Serpieri Law and which have enabled forest restoration over large areas, the paper illustrates the significance of reforestation and how it can effectively contribute to achieving the objectives of the Natural Restoration Law. It emphasizes how new technologies, Greater and more detailed knowledge on reforestation techniques allows us to avoid generalizations in the choices to be made and the solutions to be adopted, ensuring positive results in the restoration of degraded areas.
