Abstract
This is a review article on the relationship between forests and the water cycle, with particular regard to the process referred to as the “biotic pump”. The Planet is witnessing unprecedented global change. There is a sharp increase in temperature and a decrease in the availability of fresh water. Deforestation negatively affects the water cycle, modifying the natural process of long-distance transport of moist air from the ocean to the internal areas of the continents. This process, discovered only a few years ago, has been called the biotic pump, and is activated by the planet’s forests, especially the natural ones. The operating mechanisms of this process, the relationship with natural forests and the negative effects of its alteration are analysed.
