Abstract

Aleppo pine stands represent the characteristic feature of the forest landscape of North Eastern Calabria (Southern Italy). The current distribution of these stands is linked both to the ecological context and to the anthropic impact (management approaches, forest fires, land use changes). In this area of Calabria, Aleppo pine colonises the Fiumare beds also in the areas near the mouth, where stands’ dynamic is influenced by flood events.
This paper presents the results of a study carried out in the final section of Saraceno torrent, a typical Fiumara of North-Eastern Calabria. The research pointed out the cause-effect relationships between flood events and spatial and temporal distribution of pine stands. In the time interval between flood events and in the absence of other
disturbance factors, Aleppo pine colonises promptly and diffusively the temporarily flooded areas, creating an uninterrupted system with the pine forests close to the Fiumara bed. As a result, the Fiumare landscapes are generally less harsh and their usual strong visual impact is mitigated.

* The Fiumare are seasonal rivers and creeks. In summer the Fiumare are usually dry but, in autumn, winter and spring they can be particularly rich in water.
