Abstract
Sustainable development and Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) are the main topics of the conferences that took place during the '90s, beginning from the United Nations' Conference on Environment and Development at Rio, June 1992. Few of the various agreements adopted at the Rio Summit regard particularly the issues of SFM and gave rise to the necessity of specifying the C&I leading to a SFM. All the international initiatives that were born according to &o can be regarded as political processes towards a common comprehension on what should be understood from SFM. The C&I brought about by these processes are substantially similar as for the main features of the forest management on biodiversity, ecologica1 services and other socio-economical values. The article presents a review of the most significant conferences, namely: ITTO (1992); the Pan-European Process (Strasbourg-1990; Helsinki-1993; Lisbon-1998); Montreal (1993); IWFG (1994); Tarapoto (1995); Dry-Zone Africa (1995); CIFOR (1995).
