Abstract

In the second half of the twentieth century the management of forest properties has been an important tool for increasing the functionality of the Veneto forests. Thanks to the dedicated work of many forest technicians the various forest types have been coherently guided towards more ecologically evoluted phases, well accepted by local people and economically feasible. This experience has stimulated a reflection on various important aspects such as that of adapting the objectives of the management process to the new requests of society. In particular there is the need to produce essential and meaningful information at the lowest possible cost: currently the risk is to give the impression that forest management has saturated its task and that too much effort is devoted to the technological aspects of the compilation of the management instruments. It is suggested that there is the need for a greater integration between management and planning so that management supports planning and vice versa, making the process a permanent management system.
