Abstract

This article aims to briefly describe and analyze content and expected outcome of the EU Green Paper on forest protection and information, linked to the 2009 EU White Paper on adaptation to climate change and to the previous schemes on forest protection and forest monito-ring running since the Eighties. It has been launched by the European Commission on 1 march 2010 to open and stimulate the debate on possible common measures to be put in place to further protect the EU forest resources from major damages and degradation, debate that underlined the need to promote common information systems. The previous forest measures related to this topic, promoted and co-financed by the European Commission in the period 1980-2010, are also recalled.
