Abstract
The presence of chamois in forests is linked to the considerable chamois population growth on the Alpes in the last 30 years. The abandon of hunting with hounds, together with the introduction of selective criteria in hunting management, has favoured chamois settlement into the forest, particularly when the site is on steep and rocky slopes. Census difficulties in forest habitats favour density increase and damage on forest regeneration. For these reasons, it will be necessary to carefully evaluate this phenomenon and adopt suitable and specific management strategies of chamois in this habitat.
