Abstract

The optimal characteristics of wintering woodcock’s habitat are investigated. Particularly relevant are the age of woodlands types (with deciduous trees and stands of different ages and with an important shrub stratum), the presence of meadows and other open areas, the richness of soil with humus mull and high density of earthworms, the availability of little water points. Suggestions for increasing carrying capacity of wintering areas and conserving woodcock population are given by the Author.
